What is an Alloy Steel?

Alloy steel is a type of steel that has undergone alloying with some elements, such as Nickel, Manganese, Silicon, Molybdenum, Chromium, Vanadium between 1% and 50% in weight to improve the metal’s mechanical qualities. It can be subdivided into high-alloy and low-alloy steels.

What are the types of Alloy steel?

There are two kinds of alloy steel: low alloy steel and high alloy steel.

Low alloy steel

A low-alloy steel is a type of metal that contains steel and another alloy that reduces the amount of unwanted elements. Low-alloy steel contains approximately 1-5% of the alloying elements. As a result, it ensures improved structural performance to keep away corrosion.

High alloy steel:

A particularly high percentage of alloying elements in high alloy steels often defines that material. The most common high alloy steel is stainless steel, which contains at least 12 percent chromium.

How Alloy Steel is made?

The alloying and purification procedures for alloy steel depend on the goal. A furnace at over 1600°C is used for between 8 and 12 hours to smelt the required mix of elements. The steel is then heated to over 500°C to remove impurities and change the physical and chemical properties. Next, a mixture of iron oxides that occurs as a result of the annealing process is removed from the surface of the steel with hydrofluoric acid before repeating the annealing and descaling process. Finally, the steel is melted and cast for rolling and shaping into the final form.

Alloy Steel Grades

Grade Property
Grade 4140 – Chromium Molybdenum Steel
Alloy Steel 4140 is a chromium-molybdenum, oil-hardening steel that boasts excellent strength and wear resistance. It also has excellent toughness and ductility with the ability to resist stress and creep at high temperature (up to 1000). Alloy Steel 4140 is also available in leaded grades that have improved machinability.
Grade 4340 – Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum Steel
4340 is a low alloy steel containing nominally 0.4%C, 0.8% Cr, 0.25% Mo and 1.8% Ni. Higher strength levels up to 150 KSI Up to 0.2 PS can be achieved by suitable heat treatment. It is often used in place of AISI 4140 at the higher strength levels because of its superior hardenability and drastically improved CVN impact toughness.
Grade 6150 – Chromium Vanadium Steel
6150 steel is an alloy steel formulated for forging into wrought products. That's its designation in these systems' specifications. The UNS code is G61500. It's the most energy-dense among all the SAE-AISI wrought steels.
Grade 8620 – HSLA -Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum Steel
8620 grade steel is a well-known, low-cost steel used for carburizing, with excellent carburizing response, pretty favorable hardenability for a wide range of parts, it has a lot of highly advantageous applications due to its efficiency, greater machinability, and high accessibility.

Benefits of Alloy Steel

High Performance

High-strength low-alloy steel (HSLA) is a particular kind of alloy steel that boasts greater mechanical properties or greater resistance to corrosion than carbon steel and hence has a high performance index.

Better solderability

The chromium alloying element of alloy steel makes the compounds brittle, and therefore unsuitable for soldering. At best, solderability can be achieved if the final category of alloys is pre-treated with a suitable solderable metal.

Lighter weight for strength

Contrary to steel, alloy steel is lighter, stronger and shinier, giving them an advantage when it comes to performance and appearance.

High performance under harsh conditions

Alloy steel is designed with remarkable tensile and weight strength and can bear extraordinary amounts of stress onstage and in offshore scenarios. They need to be exceptionally lightweight, high-weight properties for programs in manufacturing and construction settings.

FAQ

Alloy steel is a type of steel alloyed with several elements such as molybdenum, manganese, nickel, chromium, vanadium, silicon, and boron. The alloying elements are added to increase strength, hardness, wear resistance, and toughness. The mix of alloying elements sometimes varies, but may contain 1 to 50% of elements.

Their high performance under harsh conditions, toughness, solderability and machinability make them ideal for a wide variety of industries like automotive and aerospace applications, manufacturing, chemical industries and more.

Alloy steels can be divided into two groups: low alloy steel and high alloy steel. The boundary between low alloy and high alloy lines is normally considered a 5% alloying element. It is available in grades 4140, 4340, 6150, 8620.
