Stainless Steel Round Bar
Stainless round bar from Ø 3 mm to Ø 450 mm in hot-rolled, cold-drawn, centreless-ground, peeled and forged condition — 303, 304L, 316L, 321, 410, 431, 17-4 PH, Duplex 2205 and SDSS 2507 to ASTM A276 / A479.
What is Stainless Steel Round Bar?
Stainless steel round bar is a solid cylindrical long product supplied to ASTM A276 / A479 in diameters from Ø 3 mm to Ø 450 mm, in hot-rolled, cold-drawn, centreless-ground, peeled and forged conditions, in 3, 4 and 6 metre lengths. It is the primary machining stock for shafts, pins, bolts, valve stems, pump components and turned parts, and Steelco holds 303, 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 410, 420, 431, 17-4 PH, Duplex 2205 and Super Duplex 2507 in ready stock in Mumbai.

Why Choose Stainless Steel Round Bar
Machining stock in every condition
Cold-drawn h9 / h11 bar for close-tolerance turning, centreless-ground h6 / h7 for shafting, and hot-rolled black bar for economical roughing or forging.
Free-machining option
Grade 303 with controlled sulphur gives roughly 30% faster cutting speeds and short chips on automatic lathes, where the loss of corrosion resistance is acceptable.
Hardenable and high-strength grades
410, 420 and 431 harden to 40–55 HRC for shafts and wear parts, and 17-4 PH ages to 1310 MPa in H900 condition for valve stems and pump shafts.
Straightness for shafting
Peeled and ground bar is supplied straightened to 0.5 mm/m or better, so long shafts run true without pre-machining correction.
Sour-service compliance
316L, Duplex 2205 and SDSS 2507 bar can be supplied to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 with hardness capped at 22 HRC / 32 HRC as applicable.

Grade chemistry and mechanical properties supplied in stainless steel round bar.
Chemical composition and mechanical properties are grade properties, not form properties — the same grade keeps the same chemistry whether it is supplied as sheet, plate or coil. The tables below list the specified limits for each grade we stock in stainless steel round bar, tested and certified to ASTM A276 / A479. Values are weight percent (maximum unless a range is shown); mechanical values are minima in the annealed condition.

Frequently asked questions.
Answers to the questions our Mumbai desk is asked most often.
What is the difference between hot-rolled, cold-drawn and centreless-ground bar?
+
Hot-rolled bar is the lowest-cost condition with a scaled or pickled surface and wide tolerance, suited to forging and rough machining. Cold-drawn bar is pulled through a die for a bright surface and h9 / h11 tolerance. Centreless-ground bar is ground to h6 / h7 with a fine finish and straightness better than 0.5 mm/m, which is what shafting and close-fit assemblies need.
Which stainless grade machines best?
+
Grade 303 is the free-machining austenitic, with added sulphur that breaks chips and allows roughly 30% higher cutting speeds — ideal for high-volume turned parts. It has lower corrosion resistance and poorer weldability than 304, so use 304 or 316L where the part is welded or exposed to chlorides.
Can round bar be supplied to NACE MR0175 for sour service?
+
Yes. 316L, Duplex 2205, Super Duplex 2507 and 17-4 PH (H1150 double-aged) are supplied with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 certification, hardness testing and heat-treatment records, with hardness capped at 22 HRC for austenitic and 32 HRC for duplex grades.
How do I calculate the weight of stainless round bar?
+
Weight per metre = diameter² (mm) × density (g/cm³) × π ÷ 4000. For 316 at 8.00 g/cm³, a Ø 50 mm bar weighs 50² × 8.00 × 0.0007854 = 15.7 kg per metre. Our metal weight calculator does this for any grade, diameter and length.
Do you supply cut lengths or only full 6 m bars?
+
We saw to your cut list from as short as 20 mm, with a length tolerance of about ±1 mm and squareness suited to direct chucking. Cut pieces carry the transferred heat number so full traceability is retained.
What is the largest diameter you can supply?
+
Rolled bar is stocked to Ø 450 mm. Above that, we supply forged and peeled bar to Ø 800 mm from approved Indian forge shops, typically on a 4–6 week cycle, with ultrasonic testing to ASTM A388 where required.
