What is tantalum?
Tantalum is a refractory metal with a melting point of 3017 °C and corrosion resistance close to glass — it is unattacked by hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric and phosphoric acids at concentrations and temperatures that destroy nickel alloys and zirconium. Tantalum is supplied as commercially pure metal or as Ta-2.5W, which adds tungsten for higher strength.

Why is tantalum used in acid plants?

Tantalum resists hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric and phosphoric acid at concentrations and temperatures where nickel alloys and zirconium corrode, with a corrosion rate often below 0.025 mm per year. Bayonet heaters and condensers made of thin tantalum sheet therefore last for decades in duties that destroy other metals.
What does not attack tantalum?

Almost nothing at ordinary process conditions. The exceptions are hydrofluoric acid, fluoride-bearing media, strong alkalis such as hot caustic, fuming sulphuric acid (oleum) and free sulphur trioxide. Everywhere else tantalum behaves close to glass.
Do you supply small quantities of tantalum foil?

Yes. Foil, sheet cut pieces and short rod lengths are supplied in single-piece quantities for R&D, repair patches and trial fabrication, with the full purity certificate.
Every dispatch is traceable, tested and certified.
Material is supplied with EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) mill test certificates, PMI and spectro verification, and is open to third-party inspection by TUV, SGS, BV, Lloyd’s and IRS from our Mumbai warehouse.
