What is monel?
Monel is a family of nickel-copper alloys — nominally 63–70% nickel and 28–34% copper — that resist seawater, brine, hydrofluoric acid, sulphuric acid and alkalis far better than stainless steel, and stay tough from cryogenic temperatures up to about 480 °C. The stocked grades are Monel 400 (UNS N04400), free-machining Monel R-405 (N04405) and age-hardenable Monel K-500 (N05500).

What is the difference between Monel 400 and Monel K-500?

Monel 400 is a solid-solution nickel-copper alloy with about 550 MPa tensile strength, used for seawater and acid service. Monel K-500 adds aluminium and titanium so it can be age-hardened to roughly 1000 MPa tensile and 300 HB, giving three times the yield strength of 400 while keeping the same corrosion resistance — the standard choice for pump and propeller shafts.
Is Monel resistant to seawater?

Yes. Monel 400 is one of the best general-purpose seawater alloys, resisting flowing seawater, brine and chloride pitting where 316L fails. In stagnant, oxygen-depleted seawater it can suffer crevice attack, so flow velocity and crevice design should be considered.
What is UNS N04400?

UNS N04400 is Monel 400 — nominally 63% minimum nickel, 28–34% copper, with iron and manganese balance. It is supplied to ASTM B127 (plate, sheet, strip), B164 (rod and bar) and B165 (seamless pipe and tube).
Do you supply Monel fasteners to NACE MR0175?

Yes. Monel K-500 studs, bolts and nuts are supplied in the solution-treated and aged condition with hardness reports within NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 limits, together with 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificates.
Every dispatch is traceable, tested and certified.
Material is supplied with EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) mill test certificates, PMI and spectro verification, and is open to third-party inspection by TUV, SGS, BV, Lloyd’s and IRS from our Mumbai warehouse.
