What is zirconium?
Zirconium is a reactive metal that forms a tenacious zirconium oxide film, giving outstanding resistance to hydrochloric acid at all concentrations, sulphuric acid up to about 70%, nitric acid, urea and most organic acids and alkalis. Zr 702 (UNS R60702) is the standard corrosion grade; Zr 705 (R60705) adds niobium for higher strength.

When should zirconium be used instead of Hastelloy or titanium?

Zirconium 702 is the better choice in hot hydrochloric acid at all concentrations, in sulphuric acid up to about 70%, and in urea service, where it outperforms both. Titanium is preferred for seawater and oxidising chlorides, and Hastelloy where the medium carries ferric or cupric chloride, which attack zirconium.
What is the difference between Zr 702 and Zr 705?

Zr 702 is unalloyed reactor-grade zirconium with about 380 MPa tensile strength, used for corrosion service. Zr 705 adds 2–3% niobium, raising tensile strength to about 550 MPa for pressure-retaining components where thinner walls or higher design stress are needed.
Can zirconium be welded?

Yes, by GTAW with full inert-gas shielding of the face, root and cooling weld, ideally in a chamber or with trailing shields. Like titanium, zirconium absorbs oxygen and nitrogen when hot, so a bright silver weld is required and any white or grey weld deposit must be rejected.
