Unalloyed tantalum (UNS R05200 sintered, R05400 electron-beam melted) is virtually inert to hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric and phosphoric acids at concentrations and temperatures where every other engineering metal fails. With a 3017 °C melting point and 16.6 g/cm³ density, it is used for acid-plant heat exchangers, bayonet heaters, rupture discs and chemical linings.
