ER309L and E309L-16 have higher chromium and nickel than 308L, so they can absorb dilution from carbon steel and still give a crack-resistant austenitic weld. They are used to join stainless steel to mild or low-alloy steel, and as the first buffer layer when cladding carbon steel with stainless.
